A Quick Fix for Gelled Diesel Fuel and Frozen Fuel Filters
Outperforms Power Service 911 Diesel Fuel Supplement in Industry Tests
AMSOIL Diesel Recovery (Product Code: DRC) is an emergency diesel fuel treatment that quickly dissolves the wax crystals that form when diesel fuel has surpassed its cloud point. It liquefies gelled diesel fuel and thaws frozen fuel filters, to fix the problem and avoid costly towing charges. In order to test the performance capabilities of AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Emergency Fuel Treatment, AMSOIL commissioned an independent laboratory to perform an evaluation. Three types of diesel fuel were tested. As the graphs in the Product Details section below demonstrate, AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Emergency Fuel Treatment delivers superior performance compared to Power Service 911 Diesel Fuel Supplement.
Diesel fuel quality varies from one filling station to the next, and low-quality fuel can have a cloud point as high as 4.4°C (40°F), making AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Emergency Fuel Treatment a necessity for diesel operators in cold-weather climates – it’s cheap insurance against frozen fuel!
- Quickly dissolves gelled diesel fuel
- Thaws frozen fuel filters
- Performs well in all diesel fuels, including ULSD, off-road and biodiesel fuels
- Alcohol-free, making it safe for repeated treatments
- Reduces the tendency for corrosion
- Contains no chemicals that interact with fuel system components
- Outperforms Power Service 911 Diesel Fuel Supplement

Cold Weather and Diesel Fuel
As the temperature drops, the wax naturally found in diesel fuel begins to form crystals. The point at which wax crystals form is known as the cloud point. These wax crystals eventually clog the fuel filter and starve the engine of fuel, preventing it from starting or even stalling out a running engine. AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Emergency Fuel Treatment quickly dissolves gelled fuel to allow the operator to continue driving with minimal downtime. (It separates the molecular bonds of wax crystals that have agglomerated in diesel fuel.) AMSOIL Diesel Recovery thaws frozen fuel filters and reduces the need for a new filter, saving money and preventing an inconvenient trip to an auto parts store.
Number 1 Diesel Fuel
One traditional solution to cold-weather problems in diesel engines is the use of number 1 diesel fuel, which is diesel fuel diluted with kerosene. While number 1 diesel fuel has an advantage in low-temperature operability, there are also several disadvantages. The energy content of number 1 diesel fuel is about 95 percent of number 2 diesel fuel, resulting in reduced fuel economy and less horsepower. In addition, the kerosene used in number 1 diesel fuel provides less lubrication for the fuel pump and fuel distributor, increasing the likelihood for wear on these critical components.
Quick Fix for Gelled Diesel Fuel
AMSOIL Cold Flow Diesel Anti-Gel Fuel Additive with Deicer can effectively maintain fuel flow in cold weather, reducing the cold filter-plugging point (CFPP) by up to 20°F (15°C) in ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD). However, AMSOIL Cold Flow must be added to diesel fuel BEFORE it reaches its cloud point – it prevents problems from occurring, but it will not dissolve wax or liquefy diesel fuel once wax crystals have formed. To fix the problem of gelled diesel fuel, AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Emergency Fuel Treatment is specifically formulated to break down the wax crystal structure and get diesel fuel flowing again.
AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Proven Superior to Power Service 911 Diesel Fuel Supplement
In order to test the performance capabilities of AMSOIL Diesel Recovery, AMSOIL commissioned an independent laboratory to perform an evaluation. Three types of diesel fuel were used in the testing, including ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD), B2 biodiesel and B5 diesel. Three samples of each fuel-type were tested: one with a treatment of AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Emergency Fuel Treatment, one with a treatment of Power Service 911 Diesel Fuel Supplement and one untreated sample.
AMSOIL Diesel Recovery was administered at the recommended treatment rate of 30 ounces per 30 gallons of fuel. The treatment rate for Power Service Diesel 911 varies according to package size; Power Service’s maximum recommended dosage of 32 ounces per 30 gallons of fuel was used in this evaluation. As the results below demonstrate, AMSOIL Diesel Recovery delivers superior performance compared to Diesel 911:
- In ULSD, AMSOIL Diesel Recovery reduced the fuel’s pour point by 27°C and the CFPP by 17°C. Power Service Diesel 911, on the other hand, only reduced the pour point of ULSD by 10.5°C and actually increased the fuel’s CFPP by .5°C.
- In B2 biodiesel, AMSOIL Diesel Recovery reduced the fuel’s pour point 9°C and reduced the CFPP 19.75°C. Power Service Diesel 911 increased the fuel’s pour point 5.25°C and reduced the CFPP only 6°C.
- In B5 biodiesel, AMSOIL Diesel Recovery reduced the fuel’s pour point 24°C and reduced the CFPP 16°C. Power Service Diesel 911 reduced the fuel’s pour point 18°C and again increased the CFPP 1.75°C.

Works Well in Many Diesel Blends
The marketplace offers many different diesel fuels, all with varying quality. AMSOIL Diesel Recovery delivers dependable performance in all diesel fuels, including ULSD, off-road and biodiesel. It is also excellent for use in home heating fuel.
Non-Corrosive, Alcohol-Free Formulation
Over extended use, alcohol has a tendency to degrade components of some fuel delivery systems. AMSOIL Diesel Recovery contains no alcohol, making it safe for repeated treatments. In addition, AMSOIL Diesel Recovery is non-corrosive and contains no chemicals that interact with fuel system components. Corrosion can damage fuel system components and lead to prematurely-clogged fuel filters.
One 30-ounce bottle of AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Emergency Fuel Treatment treats 30 gallons of fuel. When encountering a gelled fuel system, AMSOIL recommends taking the following steps for maximum effectiveness:
- Remove the existing fuel filter (the filter can be reused, or a new filter can be installed)
- Fill the removed fuel filter or new filter with AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Emergency Fuel Treatment
- Reinstall the fuel filter
- Add the remaining Diesel Recovery to the fuel tank (additional Diesel Recovery may be required if equipped with larger fuel tanks)
- Start the engine and allow the fuel system to circulate until full power has been restored to the engine
Safety in a Bottle
Diesel fuel quality varies from one filling station to the next, and low-quality fuel can have a cloud point as high as 40°F (4.4°C) . A bottle of AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Emergency Fuel Treatment in the glove box is cheap insurance against being towed to a service station or getting stranded somewhere in subzero temperatures.
